Australian Welsh Male Choir to tour the north island of new zealand with tour time in october 2008 :: The choir will do a series of six concerts
The Australian Welsh Male Choir was formed in 1974 as the Frankston Welsh Male Choir.
In 1983 the choir was invited to join the Association of Welsh Choirs and became the first choir outside Wales to be accorded this honour. The following year the choir toured the United Kingdom where it became the first choir outside Wales to sing at the “1,000 Voice Festival” at the Royal Albert Hall in London.
In 1988 the choir was invited to once again represent Australia in the “1,000 Voice Festival” to celebrate the Australian Bicentenary again at the Royal Albert Hall. On this occasion the choir performed solo to achieve yet another first! It remains the only choir to have achieved this distinction.
In 2000 the choir travelled to Wales and England to yet again represent Australia at the massed choir concert in Cardiff and to sing with other choirs and alone in a number of other places to complete a highly acclaimed tour.
In 2004 the choir toured Wales once again and was proud to have been asked to represent Australia at the 1,000 voice festival of music in the Royal Albert Hall in October.
That performance was the culmination of a dream for many of the choristers.
The choir is presently experiencing an up-surge in popularity. It has sung for the Children’s Hospital television appeal and has twice toured Tasmania, singing many concerts to raise money for charity.
In 2005 another great highlight for the choir was to sing in the Opera House in Sydney as part of a concert combining choirs from Australia and overseas. The choir was especially proud to be asked to perform two numbers solo. The choir sang in the Opera House again in November 2007 as part of a massed international choir.
In October 2008 the choir will tour the North Island of New Zealand doing a series of six concerts.
The repertoire includes something for everyone with a wide variety of music from much loved traditional Welsh songs to toe-tapping popular music. The director is Mrs Anne Credlin. |
