New Zealand Rock and Roll :: 6 Legendary Names - Best of the Best tour Aug 2006 ::  Tourtime Music Tours

Rock Legends toured New Zealand in August

Six legendary names, dozens of top hits, 100's of fantastic memories and all in one amazing Show!

The Icons of New Zealand Rock 'n' Roll show is a miracle in itself. When these pioneers of the country's music scene started out, the likelihood of their music being nothing more than a flash in the pan was fairly high. Half a century on, the music still lives and the stars are still performing.

Johnny Devlin and The Tornadoes

The Icons show brought together Mr New Zealand Rock'n'Roll, Johnny Devlin and Mr Ray "She's a Mod" Columbus, with stars of TV's C'Mon era, Shane and Larry Morris, with ever-green roller Tom Sharplin and 80's hit queen, Sharon O'Neill.

In 1958, Devlin, an 18 year old bank clerk from Wanganui released the famous Lawdy Miss Clawdy. The song was an overnight sensation selling an incredible 100,000 copies before it was even heard on radio - the "satin stan" had arrived.

Because Devlin succeeded, others followed, among them Ray Columbus and the Invaders. Orginally from Christchurch, the Invaders took Auckland by storm and went on to conquer Australia. The 1963 hit She's a Mod was the first New Zealand song to make No 1 on both sides of the Tasman.

In the late 70's - early 80's a petite songwriting sensation from Nelson took over the airwaves on both sides of the Tasman. With hits like Maxine, Words, Asian Paradise, How Do You Talk To Boys - Sharon O'Neill had arrived.  Now living in Australia, O'Neill is still in demand as a performer.

Larry Morris - Rock 'n' Roll legendBetween 1985 and 1971 Larry Morris at the head of Larry's Rebels had 11 consecutive charting hit singles, six of which made the Top 10: This Empty Place, Painter Man, Everybody's Girl,  Do What You Gotta Do, Moreen and Let's Think of Something.

Of the line up assembled for the Icons Tour, the promoter is still shaking his head in semi-disbelief that those six stars played together on the same stage.

Such a tour had never before been contemplated in New Zealand. Ian Magan says "we've grasped the opportunity to put together this special show, which incidentally also celebrates the 50th Anniversary of Rock 'n' Roll in New Zealand."
