In the middle of the North Island surrounded by fresh air and green bush lays the largest fresh water lake in Australasia, Lake Taupo. This lake is the same size as Singapore. Its mountains are most famous internationally for being featured as the ominous Mt Doom in the Lord of The Rings trilogy.
Lake Taupo is an active volcano and geothermal region. The region has become the sporting capital in New Zealand with world class events.
Taupo’s culture is rich throughout the region. Spend time visiting one of the many Maori villages or take a majestic boat trip to explore the beautiful shores heading to the western bays to witness an impressive stone carving from carver Matahi Whakataka-Brightwell. This is a one of Taupo’s must – see attractions.
The spectacular carving is 10 meters wide and took Matahi four summers to complete.
