Jazz legend Rodger Fox was awarded Doctor of Music (honoris causa) by Massey University on 26th May 2005.
In 2003 Mr Fox was honoured for his commitment and services to New Zealand music by being made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit (ONZM).
As an educator, Rodger Fox has supported and mentored a generation of New Zealand’s most talented and gifted students who have since gone on to national and international careers in music.
Rodger Fox is always ready to help other musicians when and where he can and often holds master classes, clinics, teaching and seminars for our touring school Jazz Bands or Jazz Orchestras.
For more than 30 years, as the leader of the Rodger Fox Big Band, Rodger Fox has performed throughout New Zealand and overseas, including at the Montreaux, Monterey and Wichita Jazz Festivals in the USA, and at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in London.
The Rodger Fox Big Band has performed with many of the great jazz artists such as Louie Bellson, Arturo Sandoval, Bill Cunliffe, Bob Sheppard, Bobby Shew, Joe Williams, Lanny Morgan, Don Rader, Bruce Paulson, Bill Reichenbach, and Buddy De Franco, Chuck Findley, Dave Weckl, John Scofield, Tom Harrell and Gregg Bissonette to name but a few.
He has recorded 21 albums and CDs, and has been musical director for both the New Zealand High Schools and New Zealand Youth Jazz Orchestras.
Admirers of Dr Fox include American composer, pianist and Grammy-nominated arranger Bill Cunliffe: “The soul of New Zealand jazz owes more to this gentleman than perhaps any other person. Rodger Fox is Jazz in New Zealand.”
Lecturer and trumpet player Jon Papenbrook from North Texas State University also paid tribute: “Rodger Fox's name always rises to the top of the list of New Zealanders striving to advance music.”
Rodger Fox is also a solo performer and experienced clinician for Selmer Bach trombones. His clinics and seminar topics cover techniques, rhythm, articulation, Jazz improvisation and musical styles for big bands and concert bands. He is available as a clinician, performer or teacher.
Rodger has organised tours by such name artists as Randy Crawford, The Maynard Ferguson Big Band, Toots & the Maytels, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Kevin Mahogany, Charlie Musselwhite and the World Blues Revue, Robben Ford and the Blueline, Tuck & Patti, Screamin' Jay Hawkin's, David Clayton-Thomas and The Sounds of the Supremes. Rodger Fox has a wealth of talent at his finger tips.
